Boris Kalanj, MSW

Profile

Boris Kalanj joined HQI in March 2014 as Director of Cultural Care and Experience. His background includes leadership in the design and direction of patient experience programs in public and private hospital systems, and leading organizational strategies in diversity, language access, cultural competence, and care equity. Mr. Kalanj’s Master’s of Social Work from the University of Minnesota and his deep frontline experience provides expertise to connect patient, family and community needs and preferences to hospital care and services.

Most recently, as Director of Programs, Mr. Kalanj led care quality improvement programs for 21 California public hospital systems at the California Health Care Safety Net Institute (SNI). Initiatives and collaborations included Patient Experience Transformation (PExT), CG-CAHPS Improvement Network, Spreading Palliative Care in Public Hospitals Initiative and a virtual Community of Practice for Interpreters in Palliative Care. Prior to SNI, he served nine years at Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota as Director of Cultural Care and Interpreter Services and Lead for the Office of Health Care Equity. His experience also includes work as a provider in the International Center for Victims of Torture (CVT).

Mr. Kalanj has participated in national steering committees and NQF advisory panels, evaluating standards for evidence-based multicultural care. He is a frequent speaker and widely published in his field. His depth and passion for this work uniquely qualifies him for this new role to support California hospitals.
