Data Scientist

Hospital Quality Institute is committed to providing timely, accurate information and data displays for hospitals to continually improve care.  The Data Scientist will collaborate to design, construct, and maintain systems of sentinel signal detection, data acquisition, analytics, and timely feedback to support hospital safety and quality improvement activities to improve care.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS – EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS

  • Master’s degree in biostatistics, statistics, or other applied mathematics with at least 3 years of data science experience.
  • Demonstrated extensive applied experience processing and analyzing complex data sets using appropriate statistical, scientific, or professional methodologies using programs and languages such as SQL, Python, R, or SAS (all required).
  • Experience conducting research with protected health data and ensuring compliance with HIPAA, CMIA, HITECH, and other applicable laws.
  • Superior quantitative data analytical skills, including experience with Bayesian models. Must be able to analyze complex data sets using appropriate statistical, scientific, or professional methodologies, and effectively present findings in reports for clinical and operational improvement. Experience with Natural Language Processing is desirable. 
  • Discriminating consumer of research with “translational skills,” enabling effective communication of technical information in a user-friendly, non-technical manner.
  • Advanced skill level in Microsoft Office programs.
  • Demonstrated strong organizing skills and attention to detail.

MAJOR DUTIES AND TASKS

  • Spearhead the development, testing, and maintenance of member quality analytics systems.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain sentinel signal detection systems using machine learning/artificial intelligence analytics to alert members about evolving trends and risks.
  • Participate in the development of taxonomies to categorize safety reports and discharge records, and build, test, and maintain complex models for classifying reports and records into the taxonomies.
  • Analyze HQI and CHPSO data using a variety of techniques from simple aggregation to complex data mining to help HQI and CHPSO maintain and improve large data systems.
  • Develop and validate risk and (Bayesian) reliability models used to adjust health care measures for comparability across hospitals.
  • Design and implement processes to reduce complexity, redundancy, and member reporting burdens.
  • Oversee provision of broad data-related technical assistance to hospitals and health systems.
  • Provide expertise for research design, sampling, multivariate modeling, and other statistical methods.
  • Find, explore, and leverage new datasets that can expand and enhance strategies to improve hospital quality.
