The Journey of Medicine with Virtual Care
The COVID19 pandemic has caused a massive upheaval of the healthcare system. To facilitate seamless care delivery, given the required changes in care delivery, Dignity Health built on their established foundation of telehealth with a rapid, large-scale expansion of their virtual care services. During this webinar, the Dignity Health team will share their exciting journey and their plans for the future. The team will describe in detail this physician driven initiative and the extensive leadership support and technology & operations collaborations necessary to successfully on-board more than 1000 providers to virtual care services. The presentation will include telehealth background pre-Covid19, the expansion of telehealth services during a crisis, and the inclusion of a continued utilization of virtual care services in their recovery plan for the “New Normal”.
The rapid adaptation required for ambulatory healthcare systems and providers to meet patient’s healthcare needs during the COVID19 pandemic is fraught with challenges. Successful implementation or expansion of an existing telehealth program requires strong leadership and extensive collaboration across multiple stakeholder groups.

- Describe one healthcare system’s telehealth program before COVID19 and the conversions needed to accommodate rapid changes in the health care delivery system.
- Describe the steps required to implement and operate virtual care services during a national crisis.
- Describe an approach to leveraging virtual care services in a recovery plan including the reopening of clinics and the return to normal capacities.
- Discuss the expansion of virtual care services across a large health system.
- Describe the “Digital Front Door” concept as it relates to telehealth and virtual care including components such as websites, patient portals, and contact centers.

Bita is a software engineer with an MBA in Health Industry Leadership who serves as a virtual care and innovation administrative leader for healthcare organizations. She currently serves as virtual care administrative lead for Dignity Health, where she leads virtual care governance and organizational alignment, performance management, network development, growth and oversight of activities and quality across the organization. In this role, she has implemented numerous system-wide ambulatory Virtual Care services. These include the creation and/or redesign of 20-plus virtual care service lines for the system, collaborating with physicians, care-givers, suppliers, IT and operations departments to achieve patient care goals. As the key advisor on all matters related to Virtual Care, Bita developed online training modules for patients and clinicians, and established all policies, scheduling, billing and marketing for Virtual Care services.
During the COVID-19 crisis, she and her team onboarded 1,200 clinicians and provided more than 80,000 virtual visits to patients across California in just six weeks. In addition, Remote Patient Monitoring for at risk populations and Tele-Specialty Clinics are providing ongoing Virtual Care for endocrinology, cardiology, multiple sclerosis, pulmonology, palliative care, mental health, geriatric, electrophysiology, neurosurgery and neurology patients. These virtual care services have dramatically reduced hospitalizations and ER visits, cut no-shows and improved patient satisfaction scores.
Dr. Braid is the virtual care and Innovation Physician Leader. She leads virtual care governance and organizational alignment, performance management, network development and growth and oversight of clinical activities and quality across the organization. Dr. Braid leads Dignity Health Medical Foundation to implement numerous system-wide ambulatory Virtual care Services. She is the Vice Chair of Family Medicine Department and currently practicing Family Medicine for 17 years. She is the Medical Lead in billing and coding. Dr. Braid is leading all the clinical part of development and implementation of all Virtual Care services across 200 Dignity Health clinics. She serves as the key adviser on all matters related to clinical Virtual care. She led clinical onboarding and training of 1200 clinicians in CA in one week during COVID-19 crisis. She is responsible for all digital and innovation initiatives.
Continuing Education Credit
One complimentary CE unit will be provided to dues-paying member hospitals of the Hospital Quality Institute, CHPSO Patient Safety Organization, the California Hospital Association or the regional hospital associations in CA.
HQI is an approved continuing education (CE) provider by the California Board of Registered Nursing and will provide CHPSO members an opportunity to earn CEs. Provider Number CEP16793 for 1.0 contact hour.
HQI does not currently offer ACPE approved Pharmacy CE, but the State of California will accept CE from courses which have been approved for continuing education by the Medical Board of California, the California Board of Podiatric Medicine, the California Board of Registered Nursing or the Dental Board of California towards their California continuing education requirement (Section 1732.2(b) of the California Code of Regulations). Pharmacists need to keep track of CE from these sources on their own as they are not submitted to NAPB.
